| Old town ALEXANDRIA,
dating back to its incorporation in 1749, retains all its historical flavor.
Alexandria is still a busy port, with a lively Market Square and its tree-lined
streets are filled with elegant, historic buildings among them the Carlyle
House (1753), a Georgian Palladian mansion on Fairfax Street. You can take
a guided tour of the house, which as been restored, and learn about the details
of everyday life during that period. The Lee-Fendall House Museum nearby
is rich with artifacts from the Revolution to the 1930s. Moving to the south you
will find the historic 1773 Christ Church, a Georgian building where George
Washington's pew is still preserved with his nameplate. |
