| Established by French
explorers to control access to the Mississippi, BATON ROUGE (meaning "red
stick") was named for the spikes hung with boodly fish head that marked the
boundary between two Native American territories. Now capital of Louisiana and
the fifth biggest port in the US, Baton Rouge is a favored tourist destination.
A short drive southwest from downtown leads to the beautiful tree lined campus
of Louisiana State University the and LSU Rural Life Museum. This
museum with its simple artifacts reveals how the area's common farming families
lived in the 19th century. On exhibit are a grist mill, cockfighting spurs and
pirogues used to travel the bayous. |
