| CAIRO can be
divided into two sectors; the old and new. The old section is more than 1,000
years old and some parts even date back to the time of the Pharaohs. Today, Cairo
is one of the world's most densely populated cities (over 16 million inhabitants),
with most of the major commercial and residential activity in the new city. The
city's nique structure resulted as each new ruler in its history, chose to build
a new city on the outskirts of the old one that he conquered. The path of the
historic center meanders from Old Cairo in the south, curving around through Fustat
and to Islamic Cairo, then west to the colonial Downtown district until you reach
Maydan Tahrir (Liberation Square). |
